23 Aug Storyhive Youth Filmmaking Workshop
Earlier this month I was contacted by Reel2Reel, an amazing youth film festival and skills development organization based out of Vancouver, BC. I have worked with R2R in the past on a youth film workshop, and they brought me on board to co-facilitate another one in Prince George, BC.
The morning that I was set to take off, I met my wonderful co-facilitators Jeff Chiba Stearns and Kellen Jackson; we loaded up our gear and hopped a straight flight north.
Day 1 of 3
We got to meet our students and spent most of the day going over the fundamentals of filmmaking and planning out their films. Everyone broke off into two groups, a documentary crew and a scripted narrative crew.
Day 2 of 3
Both teams took off into the wild to go film their stories. The documentary crew went out to a highway first responders facility (where one of the team members worked), and the other went to a convenience store across town to film their masterpiece.
Day 3 of 3
With a full day of filming under their belts and the public screening later on in the evening, the teams got to work on what would be a long day of editing.
Family and friends of all of the filmmakers attended which made for a friendly and exciting premiere of the films. Each team introduced their films and followed them up with Q&A’s with the audience which was a great experience.
Everyone who attended this workshop did such a fantastic job and worked tirelessly throughout the weekend – I see a bright future in film for many of them.
